Grenada Lake bridge collapses

Published Jan. 23, 2020

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District’s Grenada Lake announced that a portion of the Gums Crossing Bridge, located in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, collapsed into the Skuna River basin of the lake Jan. 17.

The bridge was closed in 2019 by Yalobusha County officials due to structural damage from flooding. No one was injured in the collapse.

Grenada Lake Field Office personnel assessed the site of the bridge collapse using side sonar imagery Jan. 21. After the assessment, personnel placed six caution buoys in the river basin to indicate potential underwater hazards. Visitors are encouraged to exercise caution when boating in the area.

Grenada, Arkabutla, Enid, and Sardis lakes, the four Mississippi flood control reservoirs in the Vicksburg District’s area of responsibility, were authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1936, which provided a plan designed to address flooding that originated in the Yazoo Basin. The four reservoirs are used to hold runoff, or excess rainwater, as a flood-prevention measure. With approximately 3.2 million visitors each year, the north Mississippi lakes also contribute approximately $82 million into the local economy.
